Nail Surgery
An ingrown toenail can be painful, uncomfortable, and, if left untreated, may lead to infection. This occurs when the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing redness, swelling, and irritation. It is most commonly seen in the big toe and can develop due to improper nail care, genetics, or trauma.
At Step In Podiatry, we offer both conservative treatments and minor nail surgery to effectively manage and resolve ingrown toenails, providing long-lasting relief.

What to Expect on Nail Surgery Day
Neglecting minor foot issues can lead to long-term pain, discomfort, or mobility problems. Routine podiatry helps to:
- Assessment & Preparation – A full foot examination, including a Doppler assessment to check blood flow, will be carried out. Once you and your podiatrist are happy to proceed, a local anaesthetic will be administered to numb the affected toe.
- The Procedure – Using sterile equipment, the podiatrist will carefully remove the problematic portion of the nail from where the nail grows. Phenol acid is then applied on the nail bed, to prevent regrowth.
- Aftercare & Follow-Up – You’ll receive detailed aftercare advice, dressing and two follow-up appointment to monitor healing and ensure a smooth recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is nail surgery painful?
No, the procedure is pain-free, as a local anaesthetic is used to numb the affected toe. You may experience some mild discomfort after the anaesthetic wears off, but this can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
How long does it take to recover from nail surgery?
Average healing is around 6-8 weeks, but this can increase if the site gets infected or if there is any trauma on the site whilst it is healing. Underlying health conditions can also influence healing.
Will my toenail grow back after surgery?
If phenol is applied, there is a 94% chance the nail will not grow back. The nail will grow back if phenol is not applied. Your podiatrist will discuss whether phenol application is required or not on an individual basis.
Can I walk after nail surgery?
Yes, you can walk after nail surgery, but it’s recommended to rest and keep your foot elevated for 24 hours. This is to prevent excessive bleeding, promote healing and reduce the risk of nail regrowth. Avoid high-impact activities until your podiatrist confirms it’s safe to resume them.
