Verrucae Care
Relief for Painful Verruca’s
Verrucae, commonly known as plantar warts are benign tumours, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are commonly caught in communal spaces, such as the swimming pool, communal showers, and changing rooms. Verrucae can often evade detection by the immune system, appearing as single deep lesions or multiple shallow growths. While they are not always painful, seeking professional guidance can help prevent their spread and ensure effective treatment.

Treatment Options
At Step in Podiatry, we offer a range of treatment options to aid the removal of your verrucae. Verrucaes promote immune ignorance to prevent them from being detected. Through podiatric treatments, a immune response is created, for verrucae detection and removal. Success is dependant on factors such as age, location of the verruca, and immune system status though it is important to note some verruca’s can take longer to resolve than others.
Salicylic Acid (60%)
Salicylic acid is a keratolytic agent that breaks down the protein (keratin) making up the verruca, softening the skin and stimulating the body to fight off the virus through mild inflammation.
On the day:
- A thorough assessment is performed, including a visual examination, medical history review, and evaluation of neurological and blood flow status.
- If suitable, salicylic acid is applied after reducing the overlying callus with a sterile scalpel. The treated area should be kept dry for 1-3 days. This is a painless procedure.
- Follow-up appointments will allow for further debridement and application of salicylic acid.
Verrutop
Verrutop is a newer treatment that dries out verrucae, promoting cell death. Ideal for small, raised lesions on toes or feet, which doesn’t need to keep the foot dry after treatment.
On the day:
- A thorough assessment is conducted, including a visual examination, medical history, and evaluation of neurological and circulatory health.
- Overlying hard skin is reduced with a sterile scalpel. While painless, minor bleeding may occur, which is normal.
- Verrutop is applied several times and left to dry. The process is typically painless, though slight tingling or burning may be experienced, subsiding later in the day.
Verucca needling
Verrucae needling has been successfully used in podiatry for over 45 years. In a recent case study published in 2025, 80% resolution was noted with verrucae needling, on 26 adults.
On the day:
- A thorough assessment is performed, including a visual examination, medical history review, and evaluation of neurological and blood flow status.
- If suitable, local anaesthetic is administered to numb the area of the foot where the verrucae is located. Once numb, a sterile needle is used to punch the verrucae tissue further into the skin to initiate a immune response.
- - The site is dressed, and patient is advised to offload from the site for 24 hours. Follow up appointments are made to review progress.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have a verruca?
Verrucae often appear as small, rough growths on the soles of the feet or toes. They may have a cauliflower-like appearance, small black dots (clotted blood vessels), and can feel tender when walking or standing.
Can verrucae spread to other parts of the body?
Yes, verrucae can spread through direct contact or by touching contaminated surfaces. It’s important to avoid sharing towels, socks, or shoes and to keep the affected area covered.
How long does verruca treatment take?
Treatment duration varies depending on the size, depth, and location of the verruca, as well as individual immune response. Some verrucae clear in a few treatments, while others may require several months.
Can I continue my regular activities after treatment?
Yes, you can continue most activities. If you’ve had salicylic acid treatment, keep the area dry as advised. After Verrutop treatment, you can proceed with normal routines, though wearing comfortable footwear is recommended. After Veruccae needling, keep the foot rested for 24 hours.
